About & editorial approach

UK Gov Proposals is an independent, unofficial site that explains UK political proposals in plain English and shows how they could affect you.

Who we are and what this is

This is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing any political party or any UK government body. The name refers to proposals about UK government — not to the government itself. We don't take party funding, and we don't run political advertising.

How we choose what to cover

We cover concrete, publicly stated proposals (and, where noted, recent policies) from the major parties. We aim to represent each party's flagship and most-discussed ideas, and to give a balanced picture rather than advocate for any outcome. We cover the most extreme platforms factually and critically, without making a persuasive case for them.

How we research and source

Every explainer is written from public sources — party documents and announcements, official material from GOV.UK, HM Revenue & Customs and the Office for Budget Responsibility, impartial briefings from the House of Commons and House of Lords Libraries, and analysis from bodies such as the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the Resolution Foundation and the King's Fund. Each page lists its sources so you can check the original material. Where claims are contested, we say so and attribute them.

How the calculators work

Our calculators are simplified models built to illustrate the rough personal impact of a proposal. They use published rates and thresholds and make reasonable assumptions, which we describe on each page. They can't capture everyone's circumstances, figures may be out of date or incorrect, and they are not financial, legal or tax advice.

Accuracy & corrections

We try hard to be accurate and even-handed, but we will make mistakes. If you spot an error — a wrong figure, an out-of-date policy, or an unfair framing — please tell us and we'll correct it promptly. Policies change quickly; we date each page and update it when we can.
