How CGT works in 2025/26
You pay Capital Gains Tax only on the gain above the £3,000 annual exempt amount. The gain stacks on your income: the part within your remaining basic-rate band is taxed at 18%, the rest at 24%. Your main home is normally exempt.
What each party would change
- Greens — tax gains at income-tax rates (20/40/45%).
- Lib Dems — standalone 20/40/45% bands on the gain, with a £5,000 allowance and inflation relief.
