What is net zero?
Net zero is the UK's legally-binding target to cut its greenhouse-gas emissions to effectively nothing — balancing any remaining emissions with removals — by 2050.
How it works
The target is set in the Climate Change Act, with five-yearly 'carbon budgets' as stepping stones. Policy tools include renewable energy, cleaner transport and heating, carbon pricing, and support for new technologies. A share of energy bills funds some of these schemes.
Why it matters now
Reform UK would scrap the net zero target and renewable subsidies; Labour is building Great British Energy to speed up clean power; the Conservatives would axe the UK carbon tax. It is one of the sharpest dividing lines between the parties.
