About
Shabana Mahmood has been Home Secretary since September 2025, after serving as Justice Secretary from 2024. One of the first Muslim women elected to the Commons, she has represented Birmingham Ladywood since 2010 and is a barrister by background.
Her Immigration and Asylum Bill — which aims to cut small-boat crossings, expands “safe and legal routes”, and charges successful asylum seekers up to £10,000 for support received while their claim was processed — passed its Second Reading 264–90 on 13 July 2026 with Andy Burnham's backing, despite a significant Labour revolt. She is also named in the frame for Chancellor.
