About
Sir Stephen Timms is one of the Commons' longest-serving members — an MP since 1994 — and the DWP minister for social security and disability. He chaired the Work and Pensions Committee before returning to government in 2024.
He co-chairs the review of Personal Independence Payment that carries his name, co-produced with disabled people and disability organisations. Its interim report, published 9 July 2026 and drawing on more than 38,000 responses, concluded the PIP assessment “is not working”; final recommendations are expected from autumn 2026.
