You pay no income tax on the first £12,570 (the personal allowance), then 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. These bands — often called the UK tax brackets for 2026/27 — are unchanged from last year and frozen until 2031, see fiscal drag. National Insurance is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2%.

Scotland sets its own income-tax bands on earned income (National Insurance is UK-wide). For 2026/27: a 19% starter rate from £12,571 to £16,537, 20% to £29,526, a 21% intermediate rate to £43,662, a 42% higher rate to £75,000, a 45% advanced rate to £125,140 and a 48% top rate above that.
