How income tax works in 2025/26
You pay no income tax on the first £12,570 (the personal allowance), then 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. National Insurance is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2%. The thresholds are frozen until 2031 — see fiscal drag.
What each party would change
- Reform UK — raise the allowance to £20,000 and the 40% threshold to £70,000.
- Conservatives — Triple Lock Plus would raise the tax-free allowance for pensioners.
- Greens — charge full-rate NI above £50,270 (a rise for higher earners).
