How it works
Guarantee Credit tops your weekly income up to the minimum (2025/26: £227.10 single, £346.60 couple, more with disabilities or caring duties); Savings Credit adds a little for pre-2016 retirees with modest savings. But the headline sum understates it: Pension Credit is a gateway — it passports you to housing benefit, council-tax reductions, free TV licences over 75, dental care and cold-weather payments, often worth thousands more than the credit itself.
The scandal of non-claiming
Roughly a third of entitled pensioners don't claim — pride, complexity and simply not knowing all play parts. That gap became a national issue in 2024 when the Winter Fuel Payment was briefly restricted to Pension Credit claimants: poor pensioners just above (or not claiming) the line lost out, forcing the 2025 U-turn. Why it matters now
Every pensioner-policy fight — the triple lock, Triple Lock Plus, winter fuel — ultimately turns on the poorest pensioners this benefit defines. And with the state pension age rising to 67, the years just before eligibility are getting harder for those who can't work.
